Hmmm good point -- do we need to define anything here? Gossip?
Importance? Monarchy in the age of republicism? Diana, importance of?

Amen. I can't believe it has been 7 years.
I simply adored her.

One thing that has always perplexed me is that days after she died
Barbara Walters did a special on her and I distinctly remember that
she said that Diana had sent a dying message home to her boys. She was
starting to talk about that, and then, I don't recall if it was Hugh
Downs, stopped her abruptly and told her it should remain private.
I've always been confused by this because the 'official report' is
that she never again regained conciousness after mumbling something to
the effect of, "God what has happened," minutes after the tunnel
crash. Yet at that time, Walters was very clear in reporting that she
*had* send home a message to her sons as she was dying. Obviously, if
there exists such a message, it certainly should remain private. It's
just always troubled me some, these conflicting reports that she was
entirely out once she was put in the ambulance, till her death.

That was a story made up by Fayed, along with the "they were engaged, she
was pregnant" ones. The man who got to her first said she made some
incoherent noises but sent no message and said nothing of any sense or
importance.

Out of curiosity, perhaps combined with a desire for accuracy - what is the
correct way of posthumously referring to this deceased woman? Bearing in
mind that she was separated from Charles at the time of her death, should
one use 'Diana, Princess of Wales' or just plain old 'Lady Diana Spencer'?

Did you make up the question and the answer Andy?
It sounds like something you would do.

It is easy to understand how you could dislike her
and her history. But it is more difficult to
understand your hatred of her? And it is even
most difficult to understand the contempt for her
by a few others in AGR.

She sort of put Royalty on the map so to speak.
And I don't think it was intentional.

Not difficult at all really-
I considered Diana in the same way I consider the biblethumpin chriatian reich
here in America- namely as an enemy undermining a form of government that I
hold most dead

Royalty has ALWAYS been "on the map" as you put it. What Diana did was to bring
in those who had no interest in Royalty of Monarchy bit only an interest in
HER- and THAT was her ultimate crime.

You have no idea what she wants or doesn't want. All you know is that there
are obvious difficulties in the path of them marrying. What a venomous load
of nonsense and untruths. You know very well what the problems are but
you'd rather push them off as "all her fault" - Diana knew what marrying
into the royal family meant and refused to do her job properly, so one could
say that everything that went wrong is "all her fault". Or that she was
more interested in self-aggrandisement than serving this country as one of
its most spoiled and privileged inhabitants and as she signed up to do. The
stupid woman bleated on and on about how much she loved and respected the
Queen and did everything she could to undermine what the monarchy stands
for.

What got to me was the national mourning, how the entire country lined the
streets in an unprecedented display of sadness. Those acres of flowers - a
whole ocean of petals with messages of love surrounding her London abode.
Why does everyone behave like that when a stupid woman dies?

You need to study some of the research done into that by psychologists,
following the event. Some of the findings are interesting.
Nobody is pretending her death wasn't shocking because it was. And it was a
historical event in itself which quite a lot of people admitted they wanted
to be part of.

Well, perhaps you are right, but many gravestone elegies and obituary
lamentations, including prayer, are dedicated directly to deceased people.
. . . why do you feel the need to cross-post to three newsgroups?
And why do you feel the need to express a potentially hurtful personal
opinion? That letter on Diana's coffin was addressed to "Mummy" - remember?
Shall we rewrite Elton's song yet again? "It seems to me that SHE lived HER
life like a candle in the wind'.

Pish posh!!!
We ALL live vicariously through people who went to ground x amount of years
ago!
At this particular moment, my favorite dead people are the ones who wrote for a
democracy, not a theocracy!!!
!As opposed to those theocrats who worship a man who went to ground 2004[or so]
years ago.
I say, let the theocrats go to Iran and live in a theocracy.

brilliant in this series, much more enjoyable than the Ian Carmichael

Wherever there are crying children we'll promptly remove them from their

M Teresa a saint? Purleeze! Just because she dressed up like
artists' impressions of the Virgin Mary with her hands clasped and
pointing to heaven does not make the old hag a saint! If she had done

She made sure not to go to an Indian hospital when she was sick. I
think that's pretty hypocritical! "you go, poor little Indian woman.

treated as I think I deserve to be!" I'm with you, Morgana.

M Teresa a saint? Purleeze! Just because she dressed up like
artists' impressions of the Virgin Mary with her hands clasped and
pointing to heaven does not make the old hag a saint! If she had done
more to save the lives of the street children instead of all the
"souls for Jesus" claptrap, then and only then she would at least have
been a good egg. She was a phony.
Really? And here I thought the Vatican was pushing her sainthood through as
quickly as possible. Hmmmmm....

Well, yes.. they are - but only because they also believe it better that poor
women die in childbirth in a clean bed than to provide them birth control so
they wouldn't BE in that bed giving birth to begin with.

I really have no opinon on her one way or another, but this is the
same "Princess" that had to have cameras on her 24/7, no? Who felt the
need to tell the whole damn world about her Marital problems, when it
was not everyone's business but hers.

You got that right, and genuinely kind according to many accounts, regardless
of what these ignoramouses say. While Charlie and Aunt Mags were hugging their
gin bottles, Diana was hugging AIDS victims, and raising more money for almost
every charity she got involved in, than anyone before her.

The Windsors, the Troll family, can not keep their jealousy in check, to this
day. Diana was also the first one who did not require a bag over her head in
public, and did not embarass herself by shitting in her pants while getting
drunk on a daily basis, that I know of.

==============
Actually (and I could be wrong), she was Lady Diana Spencer in
addition to the 'Diana, Princess of Wales' post-divorce style. No
matter if she remarried and became Mrs. Diana Smith, she would retain
the 'Lady' courtesy title as the daughter of a peer. But I think the
correct, traditional form of address is to use the highest title, just
as Charles is Charles, the Prince of Wales above all his other titles,
but his sons who are also princes are Prince William and Prince Harry
of Wales. (Strange that none of them live in Wales.)

It was a political title, as everyone knows. I've always thought it would
be politic to have at least a holiday home there but given that the Welsh
tend to burn those to the ground, perhaps not!
The other reason of course, is that Wales is a long way from London.

I think the correct, traditional form of address is to use the highest

titles, but his sons who are also princes are Prince William and Prince
Harry of Wales.

In all the other royal families the heir to the throne is always called
'Crownprince' but in Britain they never say that. Maybe it's because the
English are famous for lazy speech and like to abbreviate everybody's name.
To my horror I have noticed that they have even begun to call William
'Wills' - all in the guise of endearment, no doubt. The greater reduction of
syllables to one's name equals the greater degree of affection to which one
is held?
(Strange that none of them live in Wales.)
Nor did the earlier princes of Wales hundreds of years earlier.
Real good advertisement for Wales isn't it. I mean, all them Princes of
Wales and not one ever wanting to hang around there. Must be one damned
awful place - far from civilisation. Not exactly what a Londoner would call
'home from home'! Why don't a Welsh journalist interview Charles in Welsh,
just for a laugh?

You're right. She was Diana Princess of Wales. Had she remarried to Albert
Smith, she would have been Lady Diana Smith (assuming his rank was lower
than that of her father) or if he was Earl Smith, she would have been known
as The Rt. Hon. The Countess Smith.
